Weight loss diets are a huge worldwide business. When you look at the statistics for each country, when you look at the number of people who are overweight globally, it is very easy to see why weight loss diets are such big business. There are currently an estimated 58 million American adults who are defined as being overweight (with a BMI of 25 or more). |

It is estimated that 40 million of these are clinically obese ( with a BMI of 30 or more), and it is estimated that 9.6 million are extremely obese, with at least 6 million suffering from the top of the scale, super obesity (with a BMI of 40 or more). Compiled Worldwide data on people who are classified as overweight are equally alarming, and is reflected in the new term "Globesity". The way things are going, most of the world will need some form of weight loss diet ! In China alone the number of overweight people has risen dramatically, from the low point of less than 10 percent, up to the now recent data showing 15 percent, all in just three years. In Colombia and Brazil, the figure of overweight people is around 41 percent - comparable to several of the countries in Europe. Even Africa is seeing an upward trend in obesity, with women living in the cities gaining the most weight. All countries, all regions are suffering obesity, which is worrying, and it seems to grow inline with a nation, as it's wealth grows. The higher the obesity, the higher the number of weight related diseases reported, which include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers of the breast and colon, and metabolic disorders for example insulin resistance.
